Many people nowadays who have a yearning to rediscover the art of building things with their hands.  The first thing they think is “I’ll build something for my kids, out of wood”, which usually results in a cubby house which their kids simply don’t use.  My dad built me a train set, which he used on more occasions than I did.  It might be worth thinking about it for a second before you commit the significant time and resources required to make a cubby or out door play house.  Perhaps your children don’t actually want one, or are very fickle about new toys.  Perhaps you don’t have much space in your yard, or perhaps you don’t know if you are up to the complexities of making one.  There are also the safety issues to consider with any outdoor play equipment.  Of course, there are other things that can serve more practical purposes, and double as play equipment.

An outdoor picnic bench is often great as an imaginary fort, or cubby, and can be used as a makeshift tent for your little ones on a summer’s night with a plastic or cotton sheet thrown over the top.  They are excellent for many purposes, including surprisingly, outdoor entertaining and eating.

When built and finished well, you will find that you have a set up that will easily cater for up to six people, with all you having to do is take out the food to have yourself an outdoor entertainment area.

There are lots of great picnic bench construction guides, better here to look at how I finished mine.  First off, apply 2 layers of acrylic paint.  Then once it’s dry, sand back to expose the wood beneath.  You then can apply a decorative finish to it with a sponge brush, wiping back immediately to reveal some of the wood grain beneath.  Finish with a weatherproofing clear layer which will add years to the life of your bench.
