There are many methods that can be used to control bird numbers in your garden are yard, some more effective and environmentally friendly than others. Since the dawn of time, gardening aficionados have sought ways to drive off harmful bests while keeping benign or beneficial flora and fauna. Truly, there is little in life more pleasant than the melodious voice of the songbird. On the other hand, there is little in life that is as dismaying, frustrating, and downright vexing than when the little feathered fiends destroy the hard won fruits of one’s gardening efforts. So what is a green thumbed grower supposed to do, aside from getting physical with the pests?

Techniques that have been attempted include such scare tactics as hanging shiny objects, such as strips of foil and compact discs, or placing predator decoys (owl, hawk, and snake statuary) in the garden. Unfortunately, while avian pests are indeed “bird brained”, they are not usually so stupid that they do not realize the harmlessness of such measures after a few days.

Probably the only sure and effective means of defeating the winged ravagers of your fecundity is bird netting. By this we are not referring to netting the birds for say, baking into a pie later, tempting as that proposition may be, but rather covering the plants themselves with a layer of netting. The temptation of a free buffet for the birds will still be there, but this time the frustration will be theirs as they futilely try to get to the fruits and vegetables! And the right sort of netting will be visually unobtrusive, while allowing plenty of natural sunlight to reach your crops. Of course, no netting will be invisible, but it is surely more aesthetically pleasing than lots of tin foil, pie plates, CDs, and statues of fearsome predatory animals hanging about the place.

Some are concerned that the garden bird netting will catch birds. With the right netting of fine mesh, this almost never happens. Besides, they came into your garden trying to steal your crops, so they have it coming.
