Outdoor lighting for gardens and patios has become incredibly popular in recent years as home owners move to make more and better use of their outside space. Practically every size, shape and color of light  has become available, and they’re being situated pretty much everywhere, too. One fairly recent development which has caught on in a big way is to light your patio umbrella. This is not only pretty and atmospheric, but very practical too as it allows you to spend longer having fun around the table when the sun has gone down.

But how is it best to do this? Many people worry about the safety of situating electricity and heat near to vulnerable materials such as canvas. There’s also the inconvenience of trailing an extension lead down from where they are hanging. It’s pretty easy to address these concerns, starting with the worry about fire risk and overheating. Most patio umbrella lights tend to use LED bulbs, which don’t burn hot and have the added advantage of not being attractive to insects. However, if you are still concerned, just limit your lights to the central pole rather than putting them on the ribs. There are many attractive products specially designed to fit directly onto the central pole of your patio umbrella. As for annoying extension reels, many umbrella lighting products are now battery powered, so there is no longer any need to trail long leads around.

Style wise, there are many different designs of patio umbrella lights, and as many ways to use them. As previously mentioned, it is possible to find products to clip or slide directly onto the umbrella pole. Designs range from sleek slide-on glow rings to traditional-style lamps. It is perhaps most attractive, though, to decorate the spines of your umbrella – this will also provide the maximum amount of illumination. Small LED fairy lights suit this method best. There are lots of different products on the market right now, so explore, choose and have fun!
