There are several different types of grass, and choosing the right type for your lawn depends on your local climate and weather conditions. Grass is generally divided into two main categories, according to the climate and weather they are best suited for; there are warm season grasses and cool season grasses. There are several varieties of both.

Warm season varieties include Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia, Buffalo and Bahia grass. Bermuda is best for dry climates and can even take some cold weather. It also spreads well and resists diseases common to many grass types. Buffalo Grass and Zoysia are also good options for dry areas, and Buffalo is also known as a low maintenance variety. St. Augustine is a tough variety that grows fast, and Bahia is perfect for sandy or acidic soil. In warm weather areas, it is important to use a good quality soil for the grass. Generally, lawns in warm climates turn brown as cooler weather approaches.

Cool season grasses are suitable for areas that have warm or hot summers with some rain, and cold winter seasons. Many cool season types can take some dry weather without too much damage. Cool weather grasses include Kentucky Blue, Perennial or Annual Ryegrasses and three different varieties of Fescue: fine, tall and red Fescues. Kentucky Blue has a nice color, and just like the Perennial Ryegrass, it is resistant to some damage. Fine Fescues are low maintenance grasses, Tall Fescues can take a lot of walking on the grass and also resist droughts, and Red Fescues tolerate both droughts and shade well. Some of these types also perform well in those areas that are not extremely hot or extremely cold.

Wherever you live, it is important to choose the right grass type and to use quality soil for best growing results.
